A History Lesson: Toys "R" Us was founded by a young man named Charles Lazarus. In 1948 he opened a children's furniture store in Washington, D.C. He catered to the baby boom era and was very successful. He eventually added tricycles, books, and toys to his growing inventory. Nearly ten years later he renamed his store, calling his company Toys "R" Us with a backwards "R" to catch attention. In 1978 his store went public and was listed on the Stock Exchange. In 1984 his stores went international and today, there are more than 1,550 locations around the globe. In 1996, the company expanded and launched Babies "R" Us which caters to the needs of infants and parents with items that are of high quality and very affordable to the consumer.
