Are Wind Turbine Step-Up Transformers the Weak Link in the Wind Energy Supply Chain?

In the rush to cash-in on wind energy, developers are often trading low first costs for higher total costs of ownership to be shouldered later by the wind farm owners and operators.

Converting wind energy to electrical power is the fastest growing segment of the US energy sector. Today, wind energy represents less than 5% of the US electrical generation and is targeted to reach 20% in the foreseeable future. For this to happen, new sites need to be developed in spite of a down turning economy.

PRICE CHOPPER APPLICATION

Bolstered by available federal stimulus dollars, we are seeing a virtual modern day 'land-rush'. In the words of one industry leader, 'if there is a site that has a viable wind profile, access to network connections, and access for delivery of materials, and we don't develop it, some one else will.'

This head long rush to install more and more wind turbines has outstripped the usual developmental learning curve, where new technologies mature by a process of trial and error, resulting in defining equipment suited for the job at hand.

The added economic pressure of today's market has made an already competitive market even more demanding. This has, in the view of many industry insiders, resulted in  purchasing decisions for equipment based largely on the lowest initial cost solutions and not  solutions that will provide the best choice in terms of total cost of ownership, network stability, less down time and lost revenue from high maintenance issues. This is nowhere as apparent as in the case of Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) transformers.

Historically this WTG transformer function has been handled by conventional, 'off the shelf' distribution transformers, but the relatively large numbers of recent failures would strongly suggest that WTG transformer designs need to be made substantially more robust. The practice of using  conventional 'off the shelf' distribution transformers as a low cost solution is folly. In some cases site operators are maintaining a quantity of spare transformers to combat the frequent outages caused by standard distribution transformers being used where they are not suitable.

The role of the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) transformer in this process is critical and, as such, its design needs to be carefully and thoughtfully analyzed and reevaluated.

Transformer Loading:

Wind turbine output voltages range from 480 volts to 690 volts. The turbine output is transformed, by the WTG transformer, to a collector voltage of 13,800 to 46,000 volts.  The turbines are highly dependant upon local climatic conditions; and this can result in yearly average load factors as low as 35%. The relatively light loading of WTG transformer has a favorable effect on insulation life but introduces two unique and functionally significant problems.

The first problem is when lightly loaded or idle, the core losses become a more significant economic factor while the coil or winding losses become less significant.  Typically used  price evaluation formula do not apply to this scenario.  NEMA TP1 and DOE efficiencies are not modeled  for the operational scenario where average loading is near 30-35% and, consequently, should be cautiously applied when calculating the total cost of ownership for WTG transformers.

The second problem is that the WTG transformer is subjected to frequent  thermal cycling as a function of varying turbine loads. This causes repeated thermal stress on the winding, clamping structure, seals and gaskets. Repeated thermal cycling causes nitrogen gas to be absorbed into the hot oil and then released as the oil cools, forming bubbles within the oil which can migrate into the insulation and windings to create hot spots and partial discharges  which can damage insulation. The thermal cycling can also cause accelerated aging of internal and external electrical connections.

Harmonics and Non-Sinusoidal loads:

WTG transformers are switched with solid state controls to limit the inrush currents.  While potentially aiding in the initial energization, these same electronic controls contribute damaging harmonic voltages that, when coupled with the non-sinusoidal wave forms from the turbines, cannot be ignored from a heating point of view. When a rectifier/chopper system is used, the WTG transformer must be designed for harmonics similar to rectifier transformers, taking the additional loading into consideration as well as providing electrostatic shields  to prevent the transfer of harmonic frequencies between the primary and secondary windings.

Transformer sizing and voltage variation:

WTG transformers are designed such that the voltage is matched to the wind turbine's output voltage exactly. There is no 'designed in' over-voltage capacity to overcome voltage fluctuations which are a frequent problem with wind turbines. At the same time, the generator output current is monitored at millisecond intervals and the operational limits allow up to 5% over-current for 10 seconds before it is taken off the system.  Therefore, the WTG transformer  is designed to match the generator output with no overload sizing, and  the WTG transformer design must be uniquely robust to function without it

Requirement to withstand Fault Currents:

Typically, conventional distribution transformers, power transformers, and other types of step-up transformers will 'drop out' when subjected to a fault. Once the fault has cleared, the distribution transformer is brought back on-line. Wind turbine generators, on the other hand, in order to maintain network stability are not allowed to disconnect from the system due to network disturbances except within certain guidelines developed for generating plants.  The length of time the generator is required to stay on line can vary. During this time the generator will continue to deliver an abnormally low voltage to the WTG  transformer. Therefore, during faults, the transformer may be required to carry as low as 15% rated voltage for a few cycles and then ramp back up to full volts a few seconds after fault clearing. The WTG transformer must be uniquely designed with enough 'ruggedness' to withstand full short circuit current during the initial few cycles when the maximum mechanical forces are exerted upon the WTG transformer windings.

Conclusions:

The role of WTG transformers in today's wind generation scheme is unique; it's design must be equally unique and robust. Don't trade long term reliability and lower total cost of ownership for low initial cost.

Application Letter Sample Warning

So, you finally finished your resume and now it's time to write your application letter. You know in order to get noticed you need your application letter to really stand out to the employer. You want that interview, but you don't know the first thing about writing an application letter. You understand all the key points, but you're no good at organizing your thoughts on paper. So you turn to your computer, log on to the internet and Google "free application letters".

applications and investigations in earth science

Hundreds of websites pop up offering tons of free application letter samples. You can't believe your luck. You click through a few sites and find a letter you like. Your are positive that this one that will knock the socks off the hiring manager. You feel confident, as you copy and paste it onto a word document, that this letter will pretty much guarantee you an interview. Let's face it you found it online and it claims to be written by a professional, therefore you can't go wrong. You change a few words around, sign your name and off it goes. Now all you have to do is wait for that phone to start ringing.

APPLICATION

Let me tell you, you are going to be waiting a long, long time for that call. Take heed of this application letter sample warning. While these sample letters can help guide you in how to write an application letter, they should never be used as a substitution for your real work. Most employers review a countless amount of application letters and resumes daily. Do you really think that the free online application letter sample you "borrowed" is going to grab their attention? Chances are no. Is your application letter sample going to be original? Probably not. Is the application letter going to be written to show how you meet the employer's needs? Again, probably not.

Do you think you are the first person to go looking on the internet for free cover letter samples? In this day and age of the internet where you can find anything you need, chances are you are not the first person to use a free application letter sample. In fact it probably happens more often than you imagine. These employers received countless amounts of resumes and cover letters. They are so seasoned at reading application letters they will be able to tell yours is not your own after the first paragraph. This is why your application would really need to stand out to the employer. It's doubtful that the application letter you found online is going to do that for you.

A good application letter consists of a few key elements. Essentially it's what you can do for the employer. The letter should show why the employer would be making a mistake not calling you for at least a interview. Your application letter needs to highlight some key points in your resume, specifically those points that qualify you for the job you are applying for. How is a letter that you found online going to do that? In order for your letter to get notice it needs to be original, and show your passion for your work. Can an application letter you get online be original? That is highly doubtful. Your letter also needs to ask for the opportunity to be interviewed and needs to give the employer options to make that happen. Again, would your sample application letter provide that? If I was a gambler, I would bet the house that the answer would be no.

Instead of using the internet to find a free application sample letter to pass off as your own, use the internet to research how to write a effective application letter. Anything that has the word sample in it, is meant to be just that. A sample. Something to sort of push you in the right direction. The most important things to remember is that applications letters should be original and they should represent you. The only person, who can represent you, is you. Why would you want to take an application letter written by someone who does not even know you? Only you know why you would be perfect for that one job. Why trust a generic letter to get that point across to the employer?

Custom Chopper Kits

Choosing the parts that your custom chopper will be made of can be very confusing, considering the large numbers of custom chopper bike kits available on the market today. Chopper innovators like Biker's Choice, Phantom Cycle, Paul Yaffe and many more sell chopper-in-a-box kits available for chopper enthusiasts. Thanks to these kits, custom choppers have become quite affordable and are no longer necessarily toys for millionaires or master mechanics.

chopper bicycle frames

Custom chopper kits provide the future chopper owner with all the instructions and just about every component necessary to create a perfect chopper of ones dreams. Jesse James, famous for his Discovery series "Monster Garage", offers a Big Book catalogue loaded with individual parts and accessories needed to create a fully custom bike with truly unusual frame configurations and groundbreaking metal sheet parts as seen on his TV show. However, the most exquisite details, such as an unusual tortoiseshell finish of the gas tank, can be obtained in your custom chopper only if you have your chopper built from scratch by Jesse himself.

CHOPPER

Before you start building your custom chopper you need to ask yourself what kind of chopper are you interested in building. Then you have to set up a budget for parts, labor and inevitable cost overruns. The price of the parts has scared many chopper enthusiasts from building a custom chopper of their own, but if you have exact specifications and the time and skills to invest into the project, then parts can be fairly inexpensive. If you choose the parts for your kit at the lower end spectrum, you will still end up with bike that will look like a Jesse James creation but will still have enough money left to throw a party when your new chopper leaves the garage.

When you select the parts for your custom chopper kit, try to use the most genuine parts available on the market within your price range. Sometimes even if you have a beautiful design in-mind, you can end up with poor-looking chopper, due to a lack of attention to detail by different suppliers

Complete custom chopper kits typically consists of an engine, chassis kit, exhaust pipes, tires, steel tanks and other metal parts, taillights, various controls, a seat, headlamp and many more. The extras supplied with a chopper kit would vary depending on the brand of chopper chosen. To finish your project, you will need paint and sometimes battery acid. Most chopper kits do not provide mirrors, speedometers or other accessories. These you can buy separately according to your taste.

To avoid unpredictable result, experienced chopper builder recommend waiting until you can afford buying all the accessories from one manufacturer. Waiting may not be easy when it comes to building your dream come true. But when you finally complete your custom chopper, you will be really glad you waited.

Essential Motorcycle Gear - Look Good And Stay Safe While Riding Your Motorcycle or Chopper

When riding a motorcycle there are some items you just should not go without.

A helmet

CHOPPER

Bikers seem to lean toward being an independent bunch. You know, they don't seem to like to be told what they should do. Well, as you might expect, many bikers resent the helmet laws and especially the enforcement of helmet laws. Helmets might be somewhat uncomfortable and many people think helmets look stupid.

The government isn't wrong all the time especially about the helmet safety issue. And very little is more uncomfortable than knocking your head off the pavement. Not only that, you'll look even more stupid in the hospital with your head all bandaged up.

Get a helmet that fits

With the new kinds of synthetic materials scientists have discovered and new helmet engineering, helmets have become an engineering marvel. With their strong composite resin shells they really do help protect your head while they let you enjoy the feeling of looking cool - yes, even with a helmet. Various styles and types abound. From the full-face to the open-face and the flip-up, they all have their positive and negative attributes considering the type of biking you do.

You should be wearing a jacket, pants and boots along with your helmet since your head isn't the only part that will slam down on the pavement if the bike lays down. Yup, leather can be very hot and cause you to sweat, so find a clothing design for riding that gives wicking and/or excellent breathing materials and fits well.

Motorcycle jackets have moved way beyond just thick leather. Various composites along with mesh and you got to love this; even electric heating grids can be obtained. You must pay attention to fit since is important for a comfortable ride and it works hand in hand with safety. If you can't be free to move about you won't be able to control your bike properly. You should have no problem finding a style you like - there are many to choose from.

Leather riding pants are known to suffocate the lower half of your body and cramp you style by chafing your... essential gear. Protection is needed, but comfort is also required - try being uncomfortable for those long road trips. Kevlar Keprotec for the groin area and inner thighs are definitely worth looking into. Wicking mesh will help to keep you dry on the hot days you ride. Get waterproofing since you know you will always be getting caught out in the rain.

Motorcycle boots are a must. Any fool who rides in flip-flops, running shoes or dress shoes has never met the highway in a personal fashion and must not care much about their feet and ankles. The styles and the variety available in boots is larger than any of other motorcycle riding accessory.

First, what kind of motorcycle riding you like to do most. Maybe you will be in need of more than one pair of boots in the long run. The basic types of motorcycle boots are street, off-road and racing boots. Pick your type of boot with the type of riding you do in mind. Boots will be stiff, but you don't want rigid boots unless you doing some type of special riding and have a need for them, a need like professional racing.

The old-fashioned, basic, black leather motorcycle boot with rubber soles are definitely an option. Things really have changed since Brando played in the trendsetting biker movie, The Wild One, (based on a true story, in fact). Sure, they still do the job, but they are not your most comfortable choice, and they don't give the best foot and leg protection.

Features such as: Kevlar lining, boots that are easily removed by zippers or ski-boot style buckles, either short or upper-calf in height, and lined with the latest wicking mesh mean the boots today are as high-tech and functional as next year's car. Creature comfort and good fit are very important. Optional shin plates are good, but they are for racers that need that extra metal base plate. There are more colors are available in boots than Dennis Hopper saw on any of his acid trips. Choose a style that fits your personality.

That was a list of the basic protective gear, and there are a host of cool tools and motorcycle add-ons that will allow you to enjoy a ride that will be more comfortable and convenient. Get a trip computer or a Dick Tracy-style watch or handlebar attachment, saddlebags for carrying stuff, repair kits are good to have too... endless stuff. Many needed items are available as well as things just to make you feel good.

Wax Coating Your Chopper Motorcycle

It is time to think of wax coating, once you are satisfied with the condition of the paint of your motorcycle, now start the wax coating. Wax coating helps to preserve the paint as it contains some oils which decrease the rust or oxidation. Wax coating also protects the paint of your chopper motorcycle from natural risks such as dung of the birds, sap from the tree, smog and the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Wax coating gives the strength, shiny finish and richness to the paint. Therefore wax coating is very essential.

chopper frames

There Are Three Different Types Of Waxes:

CHOPPER

1. Liquid Wax
2. Paste Wax
3. Spray Wax

The liquid wax coating is very easy, but commercial automotive liquid wax is not as durable as paste wax. You can choose a natural wax, such as Carnauba. Carnauba is a tree which is harvested in Brazil, and its leaves are used in wax. Wax with a high carnauba contents is the best. You can view the carnauba contents in any wax (liquid, paste and spray) by going though its label.

Avoid the use of spray wax coating on your motorcycle, as it is too thin as compare to liquid and paste waxes. It is recommended to have two medium applications of wax rather than a single heavy one. Rectangular applicators are quite better that round applicators kitchen sponge. If you are using regularly sponge to wax your chopper motorcycle's paint finish, then you are doing a right thing as it will improve the inherent beauty of the paint. It can protect the paint from the perils of the surroundings and regular riding, and keep your bike looking its best.

Wax coating is not only important, it is very necessary. Some people avoid wax coating and their finish will absolutely suffer from the neglect. Therefore, wax coating is very necessary.

Synthetic wax popularity is growing rapidly as a commercial automotive for motorcycles. Synthetic wax seals off the painted surface with a wall that can last for 9 months, with the very best blends. The synthetics are very clear and shine transparent, therefore it can also achieve a mock Carnauba shines.

Things to Keep in Mind while applying Wax Coating

Wax coating is done in similar way as the base and final coating, in a linear back and forward motion following the shape of the surface. This avoids print swirl marks into the finish.

You can use your fingers as the applicator to apply the wax on your chopper motorcycle. This will allow you to detect any clench or rough particles before you end your painting job.

Wash your hands with after applying wax coating.

During your painting job, always try to use approved cleaners and waxes. Non-approved cleaners may work very effectively for removing road tar but these are able to remove or dull the paint of your chopper motorcycle.

Avoid regular contact (rubbing) with any cloth or towel on your recently painted motorcycle.

We hope all the above information helps in the maintenance of your bike, watch out for more articles on looking after your Chopper Bike.

Engineering the Mekgineer's Chopper in WOTLK

I've always lusted after the Alliance Mekgineer's Chopper in Wrath of the Lich King. They look so cool, idling outside the Auction House in Stormwind or roaring around the streets of Dalaran. Now, although you can buy a chopper on the Auction House (you don't need to be an Engineer to ride one) I decided to craft one.

chopper

So, how do you craft a Mekgineer's Chopper? It helps if you are an Engineer which, at the time I tried this, I wasn't. So I had to drop Inscription (I had reached the level of Grand Master) and train as an Engineer, again all the way to Grand Master.

CHOPPER

To train Engineering to that of Grand Master at level 80 doesn't take that long, providing you have Mining as your second primary profession. Engineering consumes vast amounts of metals and without Mining to feed your craft you will spend a fortune at the Auction house buying metals and elemental material. It took me about a week of mining and crafting to max out Engineering and I managed to craft some cool gear in the process.

Once you have reached a skill of 450 in Engineering you need the chopper schematic. This is purchased for 350g from the Alliance Vanguard Quartermaster located at either the Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord. But here's the catch: you need to be exalted with the Alliance Vanguard before you can buy the schematic. If this catches you out (I was only Revered) try performing the daily quests at the Argent Tournament which should allow you to reach Exalted in double-quick time.

Having obtained the schematic you need to gather or buy the following materials:

Titansteel Bar (12) Handful of Cobalt Bolts (40) Arctic Fur (2) Salvaged Iron Golem Parts (1) Goblin-machined Piston (8) Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe (1)

Titansteel Bar

Titansteel can now be made relatively easily if you have maxed out Mining as one of your professions. As of patch 3.3 there is no longer any cool down for the smelting of this metal. To make one bar of Titansteel requires you smelt:

Titanium Bars (3) Eternal Fire (1) Eternal Earth (1) Eternal Shadow(1)

You'll gather Crystallized Elements needed for the Eternals in this recipe as a by product of gathering the various mineral ores. Remember 10 Crystallized Elements make 1 Eternal.

Here's a tip: if you have an alt or a friendly Guild member with sufficient Alchemy skill you'll be able to mine Saronite ore instead of Titanium ore which is much easier. You send your alt 24 bars of Saronite which can be 'transmuted' to 3 Titanium bars and sent back to your main character. A neat trick which can save you both time and money.

Arctic Fur

The easiest thing to do is to buy is to buy this item at the Auction House. This will probably set you back 200g. Perhaps we should have taken up Skinning for a profession!

Here's at tip: wait until the Darkmoon Faire comes around and buy the fur from the exotic goods vendor Lhara for Just 12g per piece!

Rocki Ramrocket

The remaining items for the chopper can all be obtained from the NPC called Rocki Ramrocket located at K3, Storm Peaks:

Salvaged Iron Golem Parts (1), 3000g Goblin-machined Piston (8), 8000g Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe (1), 1500g

Total 12,500g

Rocki only sells the exhaust pipe as a limited supply item so there is a chance that it may be missing temporarily.

Crafting the Chopper

Once you gathered and bought all the items for the schematic, its time to craft the chopper which is done simply at any forge. You'll then earn the Achievement Get to da Chopper!

Congratulations, you have reached the pinnacle of your skill as an Engineer and crafted one of the coolest mounts in the World of Warcraft!
